I had 4 different floors in my kitchen, then the plywood, got up the nerve to rip that out, another ugly floor, then beautiful hardwood. Dont give up, keep digging!

My house was the third and final home of architect and builder T.P. Healy, for whom the Historic Healy Block is named. He died here in 1906. (We're still trying to figure out which room.)

It's too bad there don't seem to be nice hardwood floors lurking under there!
Oh I think there might be... but in order to verify I'll have to remove a bunch of plywood sub-floor and then God-only-knows-what under THAT.
After I've walked the tile completely to bits, that is. :-)

Thanks Anon, I completely believe your story - I've seen it happen! These old houses have so many layers... often on EVERY surface...
It's an interesting process of discovery, and I've learned not to get too stressed by any given substrate - cuz there's nearly always more underneath.
But the funny part is that I had zero plans to rip this floor up. There's simply too much other stuff to focus on right now.
Yet it appears that the kitchen floor disagrees with my priority list.
